Tanning: Getting Ready for the Summer

By: Rebecca Stevenson

Summer is nearly here, the time for relaxing on the beach, playing in the park, and driving around town. Now that the warm season is approaching, you'll want to be ready for it, so it's time to tan, and get your color on! That's right, it's time to tan, and there are many ways you can go about it, so which way is right for you?

You can go the way of tanning beds, available at any tanning salon, and usable for a certain fee. Of course they have actually been rumored to be safer than sitting in the sun and being exposed to it's UV Rays, though recent studies have shown that sitting in a tanning bed for too long is much more dangerous than actually sitting in a sun, as they tend to put off even more UV rays than the sun, actually three times as much, though many have used the tanning bed method, and have experienced absolutely no problem! Plus, many tanning salons offer special deals during the summer, in which you can use any coupons they distribute to get a real discount! Some of these places offer some awesome deals.

Then of course there is the natural way, which involves the old fashioned method of laying on a bath towel in the sun, either on a beach or a deck, possibly a patio. If you're planning to tan naturally, without the aid of a tanning bed, then there are a few tanning techniques you should know about.

Tan Accelerators-Getting a beautiful tan involves work, some work which you may not want to do because it can involve that nasty little thing called a sunburn. Sunburn is a literal burn to living tissue, caused by large doses of ultraviolet radiation from the sun. Sunburns are very painful, and your first reaction might be to use sunscreen. However, if you choose this, then using a tan accelerator, which is just what it sounds like, a substance made to accelerate your tan using the ingredients Psoralen and Tyrosine. A tan accelerator will increase the speed of your tan, however, sunscreen will do a lovely job of slowing it down, and tanning without protection results in sunburns, however, if you can get past the potential risk, or the pain, then this may be the way to go.

Tanning Creams-These are used to enhance the color of your tan, making you appear healthier, by stimulating pigment cells, and generating more melanin, which means more tan for less exposure to harmful UV rays, which essentially means a smaller risk of cancer. Though it takes a few hours for the effects to take place, it makes you appear a bit more experienced, as building up a dark tan naturally takes a long time to get the hang of. These creams will help greatly in your quest for a great tan.

Getting ready for the summer can be easy for anyone, whether you've been tanning for years, or if you're just starting now. Whether through the use of tanning beds, tan accelerators, or creams, it's totally up to you, but as always, it's best to consult with your doctor to see if you are at an increased risk for cancer or not, and if so, the precautions you'll net to take to ensure a safe and enjoyable tanning experience. Hopefully these tips have helped you, not only to remain safe, but to look your best in whatever summer attire you choose this year, happy tanning!
